Beyond DBT - Advanced DBT Skills Training

Advanced Skills Training is designed for DBT graduates and for anyone who wants to cultivate more compassion for themselves and for others.

The focus is on continuing to build a life worth living, overcoming feelings of incompleteness, finding a sense of joy and meaning and, for some, a sense of transcendence.

“A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day.  A string of such moments can change the course of your entire life”.

- Christopher K. Germer

What skills are taught in Advanced Skills Training?

1. Self-kindness
It’s not that we make mistakes, it’s how we relate to ourselves when we do. It is with criticism and self-judgment or with gentleness and understanding that, indeed, we all make mistakes and it is, in fact, a big part of not only being human, but in learning.

2. Common Humanity
To suffer is hard enough; to suffer alone can feel unbearable. Often, when we feel vulnerable and caught by our imperfections, it seems as though we are the only ones. We compare our insides with other people’s outsides. Common humanity speaks to our interconnectedness and helps us remember not to take things so personally and that we all suffer in our own particular ways.

3. Mindfulness
Maintaining moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surroundings allows us to accept our thoughts and feelings without judging them--without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment.
Why do we teach Advanced Skills?
Research shows that the practice of self-compassion increases happiness, weaves a foundation for more loving relationships and boosts the immune system. Self-compassion is a courageous stance we take for ourselves toward a kinder, more sustainable approach to life’s challenges.
