Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression and Chronic Anxiety

"Rumination is a form of thought analysis that is intended to help a person solve a problem. Why is this happening? What does this say about me? What will this do to me in the future? Unfortunately it makes a person feel like they are solving the problem when in reality they are perpetuating the problem." -Zindel Segal, PhD
MBCT was developed by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale, based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. MBCT is a method that integrates mindfulness meditation and cognitive therapy.

Scientific research supports that it is effective, when practiced consistently, for the prevention of depression relapse and for some, reduced use or elimination of antidepressant medication. It can also be helpful in relating skillfully to anxiety.

Participants develop present-focus attention that engages the body, mind and heart in relating more effectively to patterns of thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and habitual reactive behaviors that contribute to depression relapse and/or escalation of anxiety.

Learning to acknowledge one's internal and external experiences with acceptance, and exploring them with curiosity and compassion supports greater access to inner wisdom and the creation of new patterns of skillful responses.
MBCT is for people who have a diagnosis of recurring depression and are in at least partial remission, and/or those who experience chronic anxiety. To fully benefit from MBCT, a desire to be an active participant in caring for oneself,  a commitment to attend weekly group and do consistent home practices is essential.

This 8-week program includes one extended session or two sessions in the seventh week.
