Sandtray Therapy is hands-on psychological work. It is a powerful therapeutic technique that facilitates the psyche's natural capacity for healing.
Based on Jungian psychology and developed by Swiss Jungian Analyst Dora Kalff, Sandtray Therapy is a form of treatment that gives both child and adult clients the opportunity to enact, rather than verbalize, feelings and experiences often inaccessible and/or difficult to express in words. Sandtray Therapy has the potential to lead the client into layers of experiences that are often pre-verbal and long forgotten to the conscious mind. Early traumas, primitive emotions and sensory experiences are stored in the limbic system (in the brain's cerebral cortex). Sandtray Therapy taps deeply into these stored, nonverbal memories and allows them to be brought forward to the conscious mind. Once clients are conscious of them, they heal themselves using their own capacity for insight.
Sandtray Therapy is proven to be effective in helping people with anxiety, grief, depression, problems in relationships, and trauma in a brief period of time. Sandtray Therapy is suitable for people of all ages, individuals, couples, families and groups.
In a safe space provided by the psychotherapist, a client creates a concrete manifestation of his or her imaginal world using sand, water, and miniature objects. In this way Sandtray Therapy illuminates the client's internal symbolic world and provides a place for its expression -- the tray filled with sand. Sandtray Therapy is done adjunctively to talk therapy during the process of the therapeutic work.
